Routine Maintenance

Well planned maintenance system is a prerequisite for a good road network. Connectivity between towns, cities and different areas is an essential component in the development of a Nation. In the past few years Government of India has taken up development of this important infrastructure on priority basis in a big way and the national road network has improved a lot when compared to the situation a decade ago. The life of an infrastructural asset can be preserved and its life can be prolonged if adequate repair and maintenance is undertaken at proper time on regular basis. Proper design, regular periodical inspection and upkeep of drainage system are of utmost importance in preserving the huge investment made on construction of high speed highway corridors.

Periodic Maintenance

The basic objective of road maintenance is implicit in the word itself. It is done to ensure that the road that has been constructed, or improved, is to the extent possible kept in its original condition. All roads require maintenance as they are subjected to traffic and the forces of weather. Even with the highest possible quality of construction, maintenance is essential to get optimum service from the road structure during its design life.

Periodic maintenance is a major overhaul of the road typically carried out after a period of 5 to 10 years, depending on traffic levels, pavement type and geographical and weather conditions. The work involved is normally larger and require more equipment and specialist skills. As a result, this work is considerably more costly than routine works. The most common periodic maintenance activities include renewal of road surface and major repairs of structures. Periodic maintenance is planned in cycles covering several years, thereby describing when individual roads in the network are due for such a treatment.

In contrast to routine maintenance treatments, periodic maintenance treatments are ideally applied on pavements prior to their manifestation of distresses. These treatments are intended to prolong the life of a pavement by restoring (or maintaining) desirable properties while such measures are still cost-effective. Periodic maintenance can delay future deterioration, or correct existing distresses, therefore they can be classified in preventive or corrective (reduce deterioration progress, or correct existing deterioration producing a step in the distress curve).

Periodic maintenance works are divided into the following works types:

  • Reparation of potholes and similar problems
  • Heating up of old pavement
  • Paving or resurfacing
  • Reconstruction
  • Kerb painting
  • Pre-monsoon & post monsoon cleaning
